⛩️ Kyoto's traditional townhouses (Machiya) are stunning to behold and amazing to stay in overnight. However, they're disappearing at a worrying rate. We go inside and discover the 5 characteristics that make up a Kyoto townhouse and uncover why they've become endangered.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
A HUGE thanks to Koji Maeda for letting me loose with a camera inside his incredible townhouses!

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: I've desperately wanted to film a video in Kyoto for years and I'm delighted to have finally done it! It's currently eerily quiet given the absence of tourists, with the exception of domestic travellers taking advantage of this unusually quiet period. The city is a cinematographer's dream and I look forward to heading back there in the coming months to shoot a couple more videos - if there's anything in particular you want me to film, let me know. Open to your ideas!

I'd be interested to know about the shrines. What are their purpose? What's those big gate-like thingies you go under to enter shrines signify? Why is there one out in the water ( I forget where it is in Japan but I have a beautiful wallpaper of it ) if they're intended to be gates/entrances? Why are shrines usually above the villages in the foothills? Why are there so many steps to go up, especially in shrines? Do all shrines follow a similar traditional layout or are each unique in some way? Are they visited at certain auspicious times of the year for arcane ceremonies? Or are they just used for folk to chill out in and think of their ancestors? These are some of the things I'd like to know about, so if you know, then I want to know too :) P.S. Great channel. You have my utmost respect for heading out to such a foreign land all on your lonesome and your videos are a hoot matey.

Certain older homes in the US are also known for short doorways. Everyone was shorter. It seems as though all we've gained with a few inches is a little more stupidity when it comes to what matters versus what does not.

My interpretation of “downtown” would be the city centre. But the train station most certainly isn’t the city centre. Until twenty years ago it was a pretty dodgy area and still is to some degree in parts. “Downtown” is a few kilometres to the north, based around the streets of Shijo and Kawaramachi, and to a lesser extent Oike and Karasuma streets. But yes, the station area is a pretty grim.

If tourists are away, the old town will very calm and pretty silenced, i guess more relaxing to walk around. It gives another vibes. It makes filming also much easier, instead asking others wait until you done filming. But, they needs tourists for money income. Hope corona will soon over! Without money, they cannot recover much old houses.

That is such a shame. But I'm glad the percentage of these houses being demolished are still relatively low and there are people renovating currently despite the high investment cost. While I was staying in Kyoto I also saw a number of these buildings being restored. I stayed in one myself, and they are absolutely, one of my most favorite parts about Japan.

As somebody who has lived in one, my first take was "good riddance". They may look so awesome, but having no insulation made me feel like I was camping outside in summers and winters. But that Japanese renovator wasn't just renovating them, he was modernizing them. I'd totally happily live in one of those houses.

I really love that in these townhouses, underneath the 'dining table' for lack of a better word, they've actually dug into the ground, so you can still get that feeling of sitting on the ground without having to cramp up your legs. Is that becoming a modern thing for Japanese people now - or is this just for tourists?

I've been to Kyoto twice now. Once when my husband and I visited during our first vacation in 2012 to visit some family, and again in 2015 when I studied abroad in Kyoto in college. I absolutely adore this city. It is my second home, and if we could live there, I would in a heartbeat. Tokyo is nice, but Kyoto for me felt like home. I loved the culture, the architecture, the people, the food. It's just an amazing city. The machiya style house is probably my favorite. I wish we could own one ourselves.

I'm a sucker for historic things, I always really dig staying in old buildings like that. This was clearly made during the pandemic... that area of Kyoto (from the beginning) is shoulder to shoulder people usually. I LOVE this!! I wish it was this open when I come back. I love Kyoto so much and wish I'd spent more time there on our last trip. We stayed in a more traditional hotel similar to the house in here where it was in a regular neighborhood, has the small shower (with tons of water pressure!), a little kitchen/clothes washing area, then a little area with a bunk bed for the kids and small bed for us. We really dug how you felt a part of the neighborhood. In Tokyo, we stayed in a really nice hotel, huge room, two big beds... everything felt "Western." However, it was nice but it didn't feel like Japan.

This is definitely my dream place. This place right here is why I became a teacher and wanted to teach in Japan. I'm thankful for this video. So many people who live in Japan make videos of stuff mostly about culture or street food or talking to people. You're the first person who has made such a beautiful video of Kyoto! I'm completely in love with this. If you ever go back to make videos, can you cover some local stories and folklore? That was something that really drew me to Japan but since I never got a chance to go there myself, I would really love to know more about it from someone who seems to do excellent research on things :) Thank you so much for making this video. - A fellow teacher from India.

I almost sh*t myself when I saw you walking down that alleyway. It looks EXACTLY like the place I stayed in. And when you stepped inside, you confirmed it. And the host back then told me they couldn't make these kind of houses anymore because of fire hazards and old standards so he was caring for it as much as he could to preserve it. The nostalgia is insane, thanks for this amazingly coincidental video.

It is logically correct to take off shoes and switch to indoor shoes when you get your home. The rest of world should do the same. Always clean, won't bring in any virus or dirtiness from outside to inside of your home. I mean imagine you walk in a city all day and someone's spits everywhere on the back of your shoes. You literally don't know it but you lay down on your sofa or bed with those bacteria. That's why so many people dead by Covid in the U.S or Europe compare to Japan.

it sucks. I am watching Tokyo Llama and his refurbishment of an abandoned home. I love the architecture of the older homes. My family intends to visit portions of Japan in early April 2022. Disneyland Tokyo ofcourse. But then several other days hitting the picturesque views of Japan, and historical sites. The modern kawaii Japan does not draw me so much.

Honestly Kyoto could just update building policy, where exteriors of building must be built in a certain style

I was backpacking here in the summer of 2018 - it was SO hot but so worth it. Definitely planning on coming back as soon as it's safe.

It’s sometimes awkward filming scenery, trying to find a good spot, good camera work!

i once lived for a week in this houses (the more traditional one though) and they are very clean and very renovated! its awesome how they look old on the outside while looking traditional yet new on the inside. It was one the best experiences of my life

I would give anything for a shrine, especially when super Mario ghosts cause cyclone when a vacation exorsisom cross is broken open. I believe that full mental alchemist film has been made, I accidentally caused a bu baba, or in English called a witch hag, fell upon one of the actors. If spirited away was non fiction then I live in this building.

I like how you film the place, good job on that 👍. Going to japan particularly visiting the traditional houses is among my bucket list.

Does Maeda-san have any contact info? Does he sell plans for Machiya? I think it would be interesting to build some energy efficient models with solar and the newer type of ZIP-R sheathing. There are a ton of new products that would make those designs bulletproof.
